Life Changing Journey
Do you like to travel? Imagine going on an amazing and wonderful trip. At first we are in a shadowy land where sunlight can barely filter through the dense forest. The path is winding, dark, rocky, hard-packed, and full of tree roots. It is hard to make progress and the discouragements are many.
Jump ahead in time and walk with me on another path in an open sun-drenched meadow where flowers bloom and sway in a gentle breeze. Walking here is so much easier. There are no roots and very few rocks. The path is straight and progress is swift and encouraging.
These paths represent the journey we have been on with our daughter. We have moved from discouragement to hope. The Lord has given us grace, guidance, and perseverance. A number of years ago He led us to seek help from a neurodevelopmentalist.
Before we began to use neurodevelopmental therapies, our daughter was incapable of accepting or handling change. She seemed unable to manage anything except a very rigid ritualized schedule. Though she would try, she could not seem to follow directions or remember instructions. Learning was frustrating because endless repetitions might or might not result in something "sinking in." She was moody, stubborn, and lost in her own world. She also seemed to hold grudges against some people. Her voice was a monotone and she could not sing on-key. Initiating affection seemed impossible and she had no motivation to help herself in any way.
As we have consistently followed the neurodevelopmental program we have seen dramatic changes in our child. About two years into the process our neurodevelopmentalist recognized that our daughter might be left-dominant. We had trained her to be right-handed. It has been a very difficult process switching her over, but the change has been a key element to resolving so many processing problems for our daughter in her thinking. In the last year, we have begun to use the KI method sequences with our daughter. Our neurodevelopmentalist introduced us to them. Everyone in our family has benefited from using them. We believe the use of the sequences during the past year has been another key to positive change.
Now our daughter exhibits a cheerful spirit and a forgiving attitude. She is no longer monotone. She sings beautifully and on-key. She is full of spontaneous hugs and words of affection. She reads aloud with great expression, she takes schedule changes much more in stride. Repetition is still vital to the learning process, but learning, for her is now so much easier. She can now remember and carry out two and three strep instructions. She never used to share her feelings, now she does so in a free and healthy manner.
These breakthroughs have been like freedom is to someone imprisoned. As a family, we rejoice in God's mercy to us in providing the help of a caring neurodevelopmentalist. We have hope. We have the joy of seeing our daughter beginning to blossom.
